"As long as we live, there is never enough singing."
- Martin Luther
Martha Howard began her musical training as a child nearly forty years ago. As a vocalist, she has performed on the opera and musical theatre stage, with choirs, served as a music minister and cantor, and church soloist. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music from the University of California where she had the good fortune to study with pre-eminent voice instructors, composers, and musicologists of the 20th century.
Martha has been teaching voice privately, directing musical theater, conducting performance groups, and teaching music history and theory for over 20 years to children and adults and finds that teaching is her true calling. It is her great joy to nurture the talent of young (and young at heart!) singers who have a zeal to express the music in their soul and help bring to life their passion to perform. She has helped serious students seek admission to universities and conservatories, move on to operatic and musical theater careers, prepare for school or community auditions, and recreational singers just have their lives enriched by singing.
Martha's teaching is based in the Italian bel canto tradition, which emphasizes purity and evenness of tone, vocal agility, gracefulness, and naturally rich resonance. These qualities are achieved through freeing the voice of tension and enhancing the natural qualities that make each voice unique. Martha believes deeply in the importance of healthy singing that is free of bad habits, which allows one to sing for a lifetime. In addition to vocal technique, a student's musicality and interpretive artistry is developed as each song is thoughtfully interpreted and dramatically prepared.
Lessons are taught in Martha's home studio in Cherry Hill, where she uses a computer system based around Apple Studio Logic software and other state-of-art equipment to assist in her teaching.
